Great question Gloria. Thank you for asking. The class, taught by Curt Stutzman for many years and others earlier, was a cornerstone of faith formation at EMS. We are still in the process of determining all of the Bible electives that will be offered as we envision a K-12 scope and sequence for the Bible department and for overall faith formation at EMS. “Adulting 101” is a new elective this spring, taught by Jesse Blosser, that will hit on some of the concepts from CFL, like budgeting, and even healthy relationships and personal values. Additional electives are still in the making.

It has been taught at EM(H)S since that 1970s, first by Harvey Yoder, then by me, then team-taught by me and Curt Stutzman, and then by Curt alone. It seems to be an essential class for learning about personal development, choosing a life partner with strong values, and learning about sexuality in a healthy context.
Perhaps it has been dropped because Curt left EMS.

Both because of the beautiful new choral music storage, and because EMS is dedicated to teach and include singing together to its students, beginning in middle school and through high school. May God continue to bless EMS as students learn to sing with “spirit and with understanding”.

We are sorry for the difficulty. Technical answer is that the sound was distorted for the first few songs because the audio coming from the band’s sound person’s system was overdriving the EMS system (too much audio signal for EMS system to handle so the sound was distorted). Our technician was able to fix it after the first couple of songs, so most of the concert was fine.

We’ll invite former faculty and staff to our homecoming picnic every year going forward. Why wait five years!? I’ve added some more photos to this article (there were also some on the homecoming wrap up article, but yes, hard to find. A newsletter among people in this group is an idea we can discuss off line. I strongly encourage a repeat at least every 5 years, if not more often. (By the way where are the photos of this group? Hard to find! And as I suggested when MaryEllen and I were there this year (again!) let’s start a newsletter (formfaculetter) which would provide opportunity for former faculty to let us know what they have been doing after EMHS (EMS). This could be on the school website and updated periodically. I would be happy to help. Make a list of Name, Address, Email etc. and let’s ask them to respond. How about it? Marvin Miller

I remember when I was a student how much I was drawn to the foreign students, specially a brother and sister from China, a fellow from Korea who was a very good ping-pong player, two fellows from Africa where my cousin was a Missionary nurse, two sisters from Hebron who were my roommates (that was in college), and Zoe from Greece, Dora and others from Germany… and many others… I felt they broadened my scope and made my student days far more interesting and worthwhile than it would have been without them. Though I have traveled to other countries, I couldn’t have imagined myself taking on life as a student in some foreign country and language. I still am in awe of those who do so.

I graduated class of 1950, and was in touring chorus also. Went on to graduate EMC, class of ’56…so spent period of 10 years ‘in the valley’ and loved it. Then on to U of Penn with an MSW in 1958, which was also a very meaningful experience. I was so thrilled when one of my idols, since I was in 8th grade, singer Marion Anderson, received an honorary Doctorate at that graduation.
This past year has been a trial for all of us, requiring particularly creative minds and skills for both educators and students to produce graduates. I am full of gratitude and congratulations for and to all of you. We know that life itself is a challenge, and ‘you all’ have just passed a massive life test. May I end by adding, that I also have a granddaughter and a great-granddaughter who also are now h.s. graduates, and are looking forward to college in the fall. May God continue to bless us all.

That is why as to not appear that EMS is not bending to political biases, it would be wise to also acknowledge the riots this summer during the BLM protests. Multiple lives were taken and property destroyed. It was as much a travesty in the eyes of our Christian community as the Capitol riots. As to the controversial issue raised in the statement alluding to Trump inciting the riot he did say ‘peacefully protest’. Some may argue that K Harris supported the BLM unrest by saying that ‘it will continue and it should continue’ and then supported bail for violent protestors.

EMS needs to stay even handed in addressing politically controversial topics.

It is important to remember that 74 million people , mostly rural, in this country representing 1/2 of the voting public are not morally corrupt, racist, unwise, non- Christian, delusional, and needing to be re-educated. If that notion persists, we will never have the peace we desire.
