{"id":2415,"date":"2018-09-21T15:35:16","date_gmt":"2018-09-21T19:35:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emsdev.digpants.com\/?p=2415"},"modified":"2019-09-19T14:49:29","modified_gmt":"2019-09-19T18:49:29","slug":"peace-dove-puppet-leads-annual-elementary-peace-parade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/es\/2018\/09\/peace-dove-puppet-leads-annual-elementary-peace-parade\/","title":{"rendered":"Peace Dove Puppet Leads Annual Elementary Peace Parade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A 10-year-old giant dove puppet made of chicken wire, four old bedsheets and other recycled materials led the way once again for the Eastern Mennonite Elementary School annual peace parade to mark the UN International Day of Peace.<\/p>\n<p>As is tradition, fifth graders planned the event which started with the parade, included readings, scripture and song, and closed with a snack of cookies \u2014 made by the students \u2014 and grape juice. The snack \u201cmakes us think of communion,\u201d said Nathan Pineo, \u201cwhich means we remember to serve each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The giant peace dove puppets are used around the world as part of the Jane Goodall-inspired Roots and Shoots Peace Day, which EMES has celebrated since the school began in 2005. Goodall has been a UN Messenger of Peace since 2002. Each Roots and Shoots project is \u201ca step towards a future in which humans can live in peace in an environmentally sustainable way\u2026,\u201d according to the program website.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis dove has been through a lot,\u201d laughs Lynette Mast, peacebuilding teacher, who built the dove years ago together with her husband, Chris, and school children. \u201cThe tradition creates a good memory, even if the puppet is a challenge to store!\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Verses and Readings<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_8657\" style=\"width: 222px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8657\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8657\" src=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG-0876-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG-0876-212x300.jpg 212w, https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG-0876-318x450.jpg 318w, https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG-0876-768x1087.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG-0876-723x1024.jpg 723w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8657\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fifth graders planned the International Peace Day celebration. They prepared cookies and grape juice for a snack to remind each other of communion and Jesus\u2019 call to serve each other.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>The Bible verses chosen by the student planners included:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.<\/em> John 16:33<\/p>\n<p><em>Make sure nobody pays back wrong for wrong but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else.<\/em> I Thessalonians 5:15<\/p>\n<p><strong>The quotes chosen were:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that.
