Photo by Andrew Gascho.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe support from Eastern Mennonite School was a surprise, and has been terrific,\u201d says Schrock, whose wife is hospitalized following a brain injury. \u201cThe student, teacher and administrative volunteers have been really appreciated,\u201d says Schrock. The support allowed him to spend time at the hospital and be sure the couple\u2019s infant daughter is well cared for.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Leaman, head of school, learned of Schrock\u2019s situation through their church network. In short order, he arranged for eight students to join him the next morning at the farm, just north of Harrisonburg. The students dug right in, literally, and \u201cwere a real help,\u201d according to Schrock, in getting ready for Schrock\u2019s stand at the Harrisonburg Farmers\u2019 Market the next day.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8696 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG_1564-236x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"236\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG_1564-236x300.jpg 236w, https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG_1564-354x450.jpg 354w, https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG_1564-768x977.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/IMG_1564-805x1024.jpg 805w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 236px) 100vw, 236px\" \/>The following week, Anna Haarer\u2019s food science and nutrition class, spent three class periods at the farm preparing baskets for Schrock\u2019s vegetable subscription pick up, later that day. The students have been studying food consumer habits and discussing what it means to eat local, according to Haarer, a 2009 EMHS graduate and current family and consumer science teacher.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was an excellent learning experience,\u201d says Haarer, who was once a student of Schrock\u2019s when he taught earth and physical science at the school. \u201cYou can tell Radell really cares about what he is doing. Photo by Andrew Gascho.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The students were a \u201cseven out of 10\u201d on wanting to do this kind of work again for the class, reports Haarer. \u201cIt was good to see how the vegetables are prepared and what goes in the subscription boxes,\u201d says a Drake Heatwole \u201821. \u201cIt fit with what we are learning about nutrition and eating local.\u201d And, he adds, \u201cworking outside was a great change from the classroom!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The produce at Season\u2019s Bounty is grown without pesticides and sheep are raised on grass.
