With the move of K-5 to main campus, Bauman is giving leadership to the full K-12 PE curriculum. This training pumped him up!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>What do 350 PE teachers have in common when they descend on JMU\u2019s campus for the annual Health and Physical Activities Institute? They get to be on teams with names like Rhubarb, Kumquat, Jalapeno Pepper and Dragon Fruit. They got to play badminton bonanza, wheelchair basketball, attend seminars titled \u201cDances your students will beg you to do!\u201d and enjoy JMU\u2019s UREC facility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Things I learned at the institute:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>National Teacher of the Year Presenters consistently said time and again that \u201cThis is the BEST conference offered in the United States hands down.\u201d The participation rate is fa-nominal.<\/li>\n<li>You do not sit on a chair on the side and take notes YOU DO THE ACTIVITIES to learn it better than watching. Even when that meant I had to dance!<\/li>\n<li>They have an AWESOME slogan \u201cA body is a terrible thing to waist.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>That every child deserves to have the opportunity to MOVE in Physical Education class and it should be FUN for the students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8678 size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180713_0810581-1024x671.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"671\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180713_0810581-1024x671.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180713_0810581-687x450.jpg 687w, https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180713_0810581-300x196.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180713_0810581-768x503.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Things I am excited about this fall:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Teaching elementary physical education;<\/li>\n<li>Exploring \u201cspace\u201d with the kindergarten class as the students learn how their bodies move in space.<\/li>\n<li>Partnering with the elementary divison to provide teaching\/assisting opportunities to middle and high school students who are interested in teaching careers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Editor\u2019s Note: Kendal Bauman, long-time physical education and health teacher, as well as boys\u2019 varsity soccer coach for 20 years, attended an institute for physical education teachers at James Madison University this summer.
