{"id":24664,"date":"2019-10-01T14:29:45","date_gmt":"2019-10-01T18:29:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/?p=24664"},"modified":"2020-09-15T16:28:50","modified_gmt":"2020-09-15T20:28:50","slug":"sixth-graders-visit-wv-fish-hatchery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/es\/2019\/10\/sixth-graders-visit-wv-fish-hatchery\/","title":{"rendered":"Sixth Graders Study Trout Life Cycle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eastern Mennonite School emphasizes hands-on learning, even when it involves slippery, slimy creatures.<\/p>\n<p>As part of our sixth graders\u2019 year-long study of the life cycle of our area trout population, the class visited Reed\u2019s Creek Fish Hatchery in Franklin, West Virginia, in September. Some students enjoyed the \u201chands on\u201d part of the trip more than others. Everyone got a first-hand look at the science and business of fish farming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hatchery provides an exceptional hands-on learning experience regarding the biology and the importance of trout in our local area,\u201d says teacher Susan Melendez, who led the trip with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/facultystaff\/larry-martin\/\">Larry Martin<\/a>, another sixth grade teacher.<\/p>\n<p>The two have taken the trip each of the last nine years that Melendez has taught here. This year, each student had the opportunity to don an apron and help the fish spawn by squeezing eggs out of brown trout.<\/p>\n<p>Learning about trout and area stream health is integrated throughout the year. Students raise trout in the classroom to learn about their habitat and life cycle.<\/p>\n<p>During middle school <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/es\/about\/experiential-learning\/explore-week\/\">Explore Week<\/a> in the spring, students will continue the study through various hands-on experiences in area streams, ponds and lakes. \u201cThe fish hatchery is a key piece of helping students make connections and enriching students\u2019 understanding of our natural world,\u201d says Mrs. Melendez.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also key to helping students understand the significance of trout in our area\u2019s ecosystem and economy.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eastern Mennonite School emphasizes hands-on learning, even when it involves slippery, slimy creatures.
