{"id":26536,"date":"2020-01-14T10:54:48","date_gmt":"2020-01-14T15:54:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/?p=26536"},"modified":"2021-09-01T15:10:43","modified_gmt":"2021-09-01T19:10:43","slug":"sixth-grade-project-explores-who-am-i","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/es\/2020\/01\/sixth-grade-project-explores-who-am-i\/","title":{"rendered":"Sixth Grade Project Explores \u201cWho Am I?\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Knowing who you are is a key ingredient to feeling good about yourself. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That is the assumption behind an annual project that all sixth-grade students complete at Eastern Mennonite School. This year\u2019s sixth grade \u201cWho Am I?\u201d project notebooks are currently on display in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/es\/about\/library\/\">school library<\/a>, providing an opportunity for students, teachers and staff at all levels to get to know the class of 2027.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMiddle school years are full of change and at times you may feel awkward,\u201d says Susan Melendez, sixth grade teacher who oversees the project as part of language arts curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever,\u201d she tells students in the project introduction, \u201cthis is a good time to take a look around you and ask some key questions: Who is a good role model for who you want to become? Where do you go to find love, laughter, support, and care during times when you don\u2019t understand your own feelings and emotions?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The project helps students to identify important people in their lives, she says, and to to think about who they hope to become as they grow older. <\/p>\n<p>The notebooks on display showcase students\u2019 personal style. Pages in sleeve protectors feature poems, prose, artwork, photos, free-hand lettering, computer-generated graphic design, scrap booking skills, and stickers. <\/p>\n<p>The suggested order of contents invites students to include:<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 a family photo<br \/>\n\u2013 a timeline of your life<br \/>\n\u2013 schedule of a typical day<br \/>\n\u2013 reflection on an important person<br \/>\n\u2013 thoughts on an obstacle to over come<br \/>\n\u2013 insight on a hero as well as a memory of a parent or someone you respect<br \/>\n\u2013 an illustration of your faith journey<br \/>\n\u2013 a poem on the theme, \u201cThen and Now\u201d<br \/>\n\u2013 lists of favorite activities and hobbies, as well as hopes and dreams<br \/>\n\u2013 a thank you letter to parents\/guardians<br \/>\n\u2013 a closing reflection \u201cAbout the author\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the books you also find personal mission statements, favorite recipes and other creative additions. <\/p>\n<p>This is one of of my favorite projects,\u201d Melendez says. \u201cOf course it\u2019s a great way for us as teachers to get to know them better. More importantly, students often make important discoveries as they research, write and create.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part of a longer journey<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The project is a great example of EMS middle school curriculum and education philosophy, says Maria Archer, K-12 principal. \u201cIt\u2019s a project that engages the students\u2019 whole selves, with space to show personal creativity. It encourages self reflection, interaction with others and faith formation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s one of my favorite projects,\u201d Melendez says. \u201cThey make important discoveries as they research, write and create.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Throughout their middle and high school experience, students will continue to have opportunity to reflect on their faith and values, and how those shape their life choices. High school culminates with Kingdom Living class in which seniors present to peers, teachers, family and friends about their life and faith journey, next steps and dreams for the future.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Knowing who you are is a key ingredient to feeling good about yourself.
