But the interest in checking out books by students in all three school divisions was a fun project for a librarian.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was here till midnight pulling books last night, and it made me happy!\u201d said Eastern Mennonite School librarian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/facultystaff\/julianne-ross\/\">Julianne Ross<\/a> on the pick up day, April 22, 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Ross had invited students \u2014 and families \u2014 to look at the school <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/es\/about\/library\/\">library<\/a>\u2018s online catalog and list the books they wanted to pick up on a Google doc. She pulled and bagged the titles and had them ready for students to pick up at a safe distance at the appointed time in front of the school. <\/p>\n<p>More than 60 students requested books, and some took as many as 20 titles. Especially fun, said Ross, was filling the requests for \u201csurprise\u201d books based on student interests.<\/p>\n<p>Returned books that had been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/es\/2020\/03\/ems-responds-to-covid-19-flamesstrong\/\">checked out on the day<\/a> students gathered items to prepare for distance learning were returned to a box to sit for at least 72 hours before being re-shelved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you so much!\u201d exclaimed one parent on Facebook when the exchange was announced. \u201cThe girls are excited for a new round of books.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A second library exchange day is tentatively set for May 13.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The circumstances that called for the creative plan \u2014 a COVID-19 shut down \u2014 were not desirable.
