The project built on the overall theme for the year of belonging .<\/p>\n<p>The goal was to help students learn about their ancestors and\u00a0 share with each other about their personal histories. \u201cWe hope the activity will help us find grounding in our own story and respect for others as we hear their stories,\u201d explains Maria Archer, principal.<\/p>\n<p>Fifth grade class members \u2014 pictured in these images \u2014 each shared a story with classmates that they had gathered. Some students talked with grandparents to get a family history story, some brought in artifacts, some shared about where they recently moved from, or a favorite family story, says teacher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/facultystaff\/erika-gascho\/\">Erika Gascho<\/a>, who compiled class findings into the following poem.<\/p>\n<p><b>Sharing Our Stories by 5th Grade<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are from<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Picnics at Riven Rock Park in the heat of summer,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the first post office in Bergton, Virginia<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And from great grandparents who lived in Lacey Springs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are from the royalty of Lords, Kings, and Queens,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From farmland and colorful quilts,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And from the canning of summer produce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are from Jamestown in the 1600s<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And ships that brought ancestors to America.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are from playing church with chickens in South Africa<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And from Panama, the Amazon Rainforest, Spain, and Chicago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We hold pieces of the Berlin Wall in our hands<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And we hold the symbol from Egbert of England from the 700s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have tasted Rhubarb Pie and Oatmeal Cookies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are from founders of nations\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And from Venezuela, Ireland, Germany, and Switzerland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are from other states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are from Harrisonburg, Virginia<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are from 5th grade at EMES.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eastern Mennonite Elementary students took part in a school-wide project this winter, \u201cSharing our Stories\u201d with each class putting their own \u201cspin\u201d on the effort.
