{"id":37466,"date":"2021-04-05T15:06:54","date_gmt":"2021-04-05T19:06:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/?p=37466"},"modified":"2021-09-01T14:15:27","modified_gmt":"2021-09-01T18:15:27","slug":"ems-offers-teen-and-parent-resourcing-to-navigate-a-hypersexualized-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/es\/2021\/04\/ems-offers-teen-and-parent-resourcing-to-navigate-a-hypersexualized-society\/","title":{"rendered":"EMS Offers Teen and Parent Resourcing to Navigate a Hypersexualized Society"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eastern Mennonite School students in grades 9 to 12, and parents of K-12 students, will have the opportunity to learn and talk about the hypersexualized context in the United States April 23 and 26.<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jmu.edu\/socanth\/people\/ezzellmb.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matthew Ezell<\/a>, PhD,\u00a0 James Madison University sociology program coordinator and an expert on the impact that pornography has on healthy sexuality, will be the resource person.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI\u2019m grateful that EMS is open to this conversation,\u201d Dr. Ezzell told planning team members. \u201cIt\u2019s such an important step to create space for young people to learn they don\u2019t have to get pulled into the hypersexualized culture. There are ways \u2014 and good reasons \u2014 to choose otherwise.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Ezzell, whose research has been published in the <em>Journal of Women\u2019s Health<\/em>, <em>Journal of Contemporary Ethnography<\/em>, the <em>Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy<\/em> and more, is a member of the board of the organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.culturereframed.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Culture Reframed<\/a>. The organization is dedicated to helping children, teens, and parents navigate a hypersexualized, digital culture, focusing on pornography as a public health issue.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>EMS chapel for grades 9-12 on April 23 will feature Dr. Ezzell in a video specifically geared to students grades 8 to 12.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Parents are invited to a Zoom forum with Dr. Ezzell on Monday, April 26 at 7 p.m. The Zoom link will be distributed to parents on April 26.\u00a0Parents are encouraged to watch the chapel presentation on <a id=\"ow2387\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UC6Nrt6RuzmPpBdInCssoCyA\">EMS YouTube chapel channel<\/a> before attending the Zoom conversation forum.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The input is planned with Dr. Ezzell by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/facultystaff\/justin-king\/\">Justin King<\/a>, high school principal; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/facultystaff\/debbie-katz-2\/\">Debbie Katz<\/a>, high school counselor; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/facultystaff\/andrea-wenger\/\">Andrea Wenger<\/a>, chapel coordinator, director of advancement, and the school\u2019s Title IX coordinator.<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eastern Mennonite School students in grades 9 to 12, and parents of K-12 students, will have the opportunity to learn and talk about the hypersexualized context in the United States April 23 and 26.
