{"id":47141,"date":"2021-12-09T08:18:35","date_gmt":"2021-12-09T13:18:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/?p=47141"},"modified":"2024-07-25T14:30:33","modified_gmt":"2024-07-25T18:30:33","slug":"k-12-service-is-part-of-ems-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/es\/2021\/12\/k-12-service-is-part-of-ems-culture\/","title":{"rendered":"K-12 Service is Part of EMS Culture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Service both within the school, in the community and beyond is part of the culture at Eastern Mennonite School.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So far this fall:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">K-5 partnered with Harrisonburg City Schools for a clothing drive to provide warm clothes for newcomers to the community<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">6th grade raked leaves for neighbors in Park View<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">8th grade created, collected, and delivered encouraging cards and treats to health care workers at Sentara RMH.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">9th grade did trail maintenance at Hillandale Park<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">11th grade sold baked goods to benefit the work of Open Doors for those seeking shelter in our community. This paired nicely with a National Honor Society project collecting supplies for Open Doors, and a chapel presentation by Open Doors staff.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">12th grade spent a morning digging root vegetables at the Farm at Willow Run for Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The We Serve Club \u2014 an Interact Club sponsored by the Rotary Club of Rockingham County \u2014 collected shoes for Kenya in September; picked up roadside trash in October; served the meal at Bridge of Hope\u2019s annual fundraiser and collected food for Patchwork Pantry in November; and set up luminaries and prepared stockings filled with goodies for Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community in December.<\/p>\n<p>Each spring, grades 6-12 focus an entire day on service through the Community Service Day. High school students serve with area non-profits doing whatever project they are asked to do, from painting to yard work, cleaning shelves, or cleaning. Read a report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/es\/2021\/05\/2021-community-service-day-another-step-toward-normal\/\">from 2021<\/a> when we inched toward \u201cnormal\u201d due to the pandemic, and a report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/es\/2019\/05\/more-than-200-students-serve-across-community\/\">from 2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Within our school<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">5th grade students take turns at morning drop off, greeting peers with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/facultystaff\/maria-archer\/\">Maria Archer<\/a>, K-8 principal.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">7th grade students collect paper for recycling from both school buildings each week<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">8th grade students set out the lunch waste management system bins to collect compostable food scraps, napkins, and to-go boxes<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">High school students support collection of trash and compostables after lunch<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Physics students lead robotics lessons for 4th grade<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">5th grade students are reading buddies with 3rd grade students. And 3rd grade students read with kindergarten buddies.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Volunteer students host prospective student visitors throughout the year for visitors to grades 6-12.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Through service to others, students grow as compassionate, involved community members.
