{"id":47198,"date":"2021-12-29T15:12:28","date_gmt":"2021-12-29T20:12:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/?p=47198"},"modified":"2022-01-11T15:16:36","modified_gmt":"2022-01-11T20:16:36","slug":"more-hosts-placements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/es\/2021\/12\/more-hosts-placements\/","title":{"rendered":"Intern Program Grows; Business Hosts Needed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In just two years \u2014 years marked by COVID complexities \u2014 Eastern Mennonite High School\u2019s internship program for juniors and seniors has grown to include more than a dozen organizations willing to host EMHS students to explore their interests and contribute their skills.<\/p>\n<p>Internships take place during the school day, over weekends, or during the summer depending on the student\u2019s schedule and the internship placement supervisor. Participants receive course credit in lieu of payment from the intern sponsor. Placements typically include approximately 60-140 hours of student engagement over a period of 9-18 weeks. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe program gives upper level high school students a chance to explore interests, gain confidence, and learn about career paths,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/facultystaff\/justin-king\/\">Justin King<\/a>, high school principal. \u201cIn at least one case, the experience helped a student decide <em>no<\/em> to pursue a path they had thought might be a good fit earlier. Self discovery is an important part of emotional health, and this program provides that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Placements within the school itself have given students the opportunity to explore interests\u00a0in information technology, marketing and communications, fund raising, and elementary education.<\/p>\n<p>In the broader community, placement opportunities include financial institutions, with architect firms, physical therapy practices, several locations within James Madison University, a mechanical engineering firm, and an aviation operation.<\/p>\n<p>Caroline Young \u201922 is in her second placement at James Madison University. Her first was a sports marketing internship and her second placement is with strength and conditioning for men\u2019s and women\u2019s basketball at the university\u2019s\u00a0new Atlantic Union Bank Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy experience has connected me with my future plans\u2026 I am extremely passionate about exercise science,\u201d she says, noting that in her role, she watches athletes to make sure they are doing exercises correctly, builds relationships with them, and cleans equipment. \u201cBefore this internship I was hesitate about college and had no idea what I wanted to do. Now I am so excited for college, and know exactly what I want to do!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her advice to other students? \u201cReach out to people! It may be scary and weird asking someone to help you but it goes a long way.\u201d Her first placement, for example, came out of a contact with her father\u2019s \u201cold friend,\u201d and her second placement came through a former assistant volleyball coach.<\/p>\n<p>Jennifer Young, internship coordinator, is excited about how far the program has come in two years. \u201cThis program is excellent for seniors who might have accumulated the credits they need to graduate and are looking for some \u2018real world\u2019 experience,\u201d says Young, who is also a PE teacher and middle school teaching team coordinator. \u201cWe are really happy to partner with local businesses in this way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Potential placement hosts can reach out to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/facultystaff\/jennifer-young\/\">Young<\/a>, with questions and to express interest by contacting her directly, or completing <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/HxM6DNnUkznsibQ36\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">this simple form<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy hope is that the experience is worthwhile not only for the student, but also for the host organization,\u201d she says.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In just two years \u2014 years marked by COVID complexities \u2014 Eastern Mennonite High School\u2019s internship program for juniors and seniors has grown to include more than a dozen organizations willing to host EMHS students to explore their interests and contribute their skills.
