{"id":52938,"date":"2023-02-24T09:16:55","date_gmt":"2023-02-24T14:16:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/?p=52938"},"modified":"2023-02-24T10:52:47","modified_gmt":"2023-02-24T15:52:47","slug":"ems-model-un-joins-national-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/es\/2023\/02\/ems-model-un-joins-national-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"EMS Model UN Joins National Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fourteen students in the EMS Model UN group traveled to Washington, DC, Feb. 16 \u2013 19, to join the 60th iteration of the North American Invitational Model United Nations (NAIMUN), held at the Washington Hilton. Club sponsors were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/facultystaff\/shannon-roth\/\">Shannon Roth<\/a>, US History and Government teacher, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/facultystaff\/nathan-hershberger\/\">Nathan Hershberger<\/a>, Bible and World History teacher.<\/p>\n<p>During the conference itself, the group met with delegates from around the world to debate worldwide issues from the past and present.\u201cWorking with new people from across the country, and some parts of the world was very different and fun but sort of nerve-racking,\u201d said Kat Kolodinsky \u201926 when asked about her experience at NAIMUN. \u201cI think the problem solving was much easier to figure out with a whole group of people that have many different opinions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the conference, the group visited the Greek embassy where Greek diplomatic staff shared about life as a diplomat and about Greece\u2019s current struggles and opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>They also volunteered with a meal-packing project organized by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.riseagainsthunger.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rise Against Hunger,<\/a> a \u201cglobal movement to end hunger by empowering communities, nourishing lives and responding to emergencies.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cModel UN offers a unique opportunity to put yourself in the shoes of world leaders,\u201d says Abby Garber \u201923, after her third Model UN conference experience. \u201cDuring our assigned committee work we form relationships, craft policy, and make hard decisions just as genuine world leaders would\u2026,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t purely academics,\u201d she also noted. \u201cThe time spent outside of committee, building tight bonds with fellow club members is equally as special\u2026 I am incredibly grateful to Ms. Roth and Mr. Hershberger for making this possible for our 14 distinguished delegates!\u201d <\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fourteen students in the EMS Model UN group traveled to Washington, DC, Feb. 16 \u2013 19, to join the 60th iteration of the North American Invitational Model United Nations (NAIMUN), held at the Washington Hilton.
