{"id":59444,"date":"2023-09-19T14:06:43","date_gmt":"2023-09-19T18:06:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/?p=59444"},"modified":"2023-09-25T14:18:46","modified_gmt":"2023-09-25T18:18:46","slug":"celebrating-alumni-stories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/es\/2023\/09\/celebrating-alumni-stories\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating Alumni Stories: The EMHS Trio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During high school, Dan Steller, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David Wingfield, and Peter Fair<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">field were all in the same gradu<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ating class of \u201998. Now, the three <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBro\u2019s\u201d are part of a team racing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">against time to help preserve the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ojibwe language.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u201998 grads\u2019 work is currently <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guided by members of the Mille Lacs <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Band of the Ojibwe Nation, a fed<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">erally recognized American Indian <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tribal government whose members <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have lived for many generations in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the east-central Minnesota region. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peter, Dan, and David are now <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">part of a large group of people \u2013<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">both within Rosetta Stone and the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe \u2013 who <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are working hard to make this <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">language initiative happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>ENDANGERED LANGUAGE PROGRAM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2018 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ojibwe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tribal lead<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ers from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Mille <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lacs Band, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">based in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minnesota, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">invited <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rosetta <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stone to team up with the Aanjibi-<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maadizing Language Preservation <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Initiative. The Mille Lacs Band of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ojibwe wanted to create an online <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ojibwe Language Learning pro<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gram that tribal members could <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">access on their own time from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anywhere. They wanted to record <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for posterity the knowledge and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voices of their tribal elders who <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were native Ojibwe speakers while <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they still had the opportunity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anton Treuer, professor of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ojibwe at Bemidji (Minn.) State <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University says, \u201cWhen you help <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to preserve a language, you help to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preserve a culture. All told, when <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it\u2019s done, I think Rosetta Stone will <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be a historic tool\u2026 to go across <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">time and space and preserve and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teach. It\u2019s not a \u2018silver bullet,\u2019 but it <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will help to teach Ojibwe speakers <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for hundreds of years to come.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE EMHS TRIO<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1998, Peter, Dan, and David <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could not have imagined that 25 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">years after graduation they would <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">still be in Harrisonburg, visiting <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with EMHS administrators outside <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Rosetta Stone office building, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reflecting on their shared profes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sional endeavors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peter\u2019s father, John, helped to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found Rosetta Stone (okay, maybe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peter could have imagined that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">future) \u2014 the language-learning <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">software initially sold in CD-rom <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">format in big yellow boxes \u2014 in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">early 1990s. Peter remembers his <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first paying job scrubbing toilets <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the company. After earning <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a degree in Math from Goshen <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">College in 2002, he returned to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the company, and has been lead <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">developer since 2007.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After University, David applied <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for a photo assistant job at Rosetta <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stone. David didn\u2019t get that job, it <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">went to fellow EMHS Alum Steve <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Witmer, but David was hired as an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">assistant to the new photo assistant <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steve and over time moved into <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">producer, photography, and man<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">agement roles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dan joined the Rosetta Stone <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">team as a contract photographer <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from L.A., where he was living <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after graduating from the Los <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angeles Film Studies Center. Dan <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and Bridget eventually relocated <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to Harrisonburg in 2010 and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">continued raising possible future <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EMS Alums. Dan has been a senior <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creative producer since 2013. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Dan and Bridget, and also <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for Peter, it\u2019s surreal to find them<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selves as parents of current EMS <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kids. \u201cNot to be cheugy, but this <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">community is boots, no cap.\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dan, referring to the school and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">area.
