What should I be doing now to prepare for college?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With one year behind you, sophomore year is when you really feel settled into high school, but already it\u2019s time to be looking ahead and making sure your decisions and actions\u00a0will keep options open in the future.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Continue to <\/span><b>challenge yourself academically<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but strive for balance. If you are ready for a challenge, take optional honors in a class or two (or three!).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Read.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Aim for variety. Grow your knowledge and your vocabulary.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Get involved:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Colleges care about the whole you, not just your grades &amp; test scores. They want to know you can balance activities and academics. Find something you really enjoy and dive in.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start thinking of ways to show <\/span><b>initiative &amp; investment <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in your areas of interest.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Take the PSAT in October.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> View this as a chance to experience the test before it matters and to see how your scores compare with other sophomores in the US.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Start visiting colleges.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The sooner you start your visits, the more confident you will feel senior year as you finalize your list. Aim for a variety\u2014a small private, a large public, something in-between&#8211;start to get a sense for what you want in a college.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Do some career exploration.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In English 10, we\u2019ll do some personal inventories and research. Consider trying the YouScience games in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/app.scoir.com\/signin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scoir<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Talk to professionals in areas of your interest. Consider job shadowing this summer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>If a problem comes up, ask for help.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you are having trouble in a class, now is the time to talk about what kind of assistance you might need.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Foster good relationships with your teachers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (and with your college counselor, wink wink)\u2014they will be the ones to write your recommendation letters.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have time, do some<\/span><b> SAT prep<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Khan Academy. Connect through <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/account.collegeboard.org\/login\/login\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">College Board<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (use the login\/password you created to access your PSAT results).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Plan your junior year course load carefully<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: that\u2019s the one that counts the most. If you plan to apply to highly selective colleges, discuss your schedule with Ms. Hertzler to make sure you\u2019re taking the courses you\u2019ll need.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Make summer plans<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014do something resume building: work, volunteer, take a class, attend a camp, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m in 10th grade.
