What do I have to do again? (an application checklist for the seniors)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This one is for my seniors and the adults who are trying to help them navigate the application process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every year, I meet with seniors several times to help get their applications completed and I walk them through the<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/hurdlesfirstbeta.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/steeplechase.jpg\" alt=\"https:\/\/hurdlesfirstbeta.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/steeplechase.jpg\" width=\"236\" height=\"140\" \/> steps for submitting them. But over the years, I\u2019ve learned that the process is kind of like running a steeplechase: each step feels like an obstacle of varying difficulty, and when you\u2019re focused on the hurdle right in front of you, it\u2019s difficult to process instructions about the water jump that\u2019s several barriers ahead. (Sports fans, I apologize for using a metaphor for something I watched once during an Olympics many years ago.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I\u2019m writing this post as another guide and reference point you can use to make sure you remember everything.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep in mind that these steps are NOT in any particular order. Materials can be sent to colleges in any order, and you have to plan ahead for some of them. I\u2019d recommend starting your application and essays well before the two-week point I start the checklist with\u2013but you don\u2019t actually have to submit them until the deadline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below, I describe each step in detail, but here&#8217;s a simplified checklist you can print and keep handy (seniors, there\u2019s one of these in the folder I gave you . . . if you can still find it). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/onward\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/College-application-checklist-1.pdf\">College application checklist<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>At least two weeks before the college deadline:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sign the FERPA Authorization and Waiver of Rights<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/app.scoir.com\/signin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scoir <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonapp.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common App<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (if you\u2019re using it). This only has to be done once on each platform and then it will apply to all colleges. This gives us permission to release your transcripts and promises colleges that you won\u2019t see your letters of recommendation (so they are assured the letters are honest and confidential). If you came to one of my application workshops or paid attention to my presentation in Gov\u2019t class, I walked you through this step.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Request a teacher recommendation letter.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You must allow at least two weeks for a teacher to write their recommendation, but it\u2019s best to give them more. The best letters are written by people who aren\u2019t worrying about a deadline. You probably only need one letter, but check each college\u2019s requirements. You might need two, or you might not need any! Each letter is written generally (not to a specific college), so that letter can be sent to all your colleges.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fill out the purple request form. Ask your teacher personally to write the letter and hand them the form.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Request the recommendation through <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/app.scoir.com\/signin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scoir<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so your teacher can upload the letter. (In the \u201cMy Colleges\u201d tab, click \u201cManage Documents.\u201d)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Move the colleges you\u2019re applying to into the \u201cApplied\u201d column in <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/app.scoir.com\/signin\"><b>Scoir<\/b><\/a><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It streamlines our process if you do this before you request transcripts, and it\u2019s okay to take this step before you have actually applied.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Request your transcripts to be sent.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You must complete this form for every college you want a transcript sent to.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/WZz5bzpnTFU57VBk6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HERE <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or use the QR Code on the checklist I linked above for the Transcript Request Form. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need to know whether you need a counselor recommendation for each college\u2013this document also serves as your request for a counselor letter\u2013check the college websites! Please don\u2019t ask me to write a letter if the college doesn\u2019t want one.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you plan to <\/span><b>submit test scores<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, check the college website to see if you can simply self-report scores (which you do in the application) or if they need to receive official scores. If they need the official scores, you must go to your account on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/account.collegeboard.org\/login\/login?appId=292&amp;idp=&amp;DURL=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.collegeboard.org%2F\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">College Board<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.act.org\/content\/act\/en\/register.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ACT <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to have them sent.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International students: If English is not your first language, you will likely need test scores confirming English proficiency. Some colleges waive this requirement if you had two or more years of high school in the US or if you scored over 500 on the EBRW section of the SAT. They may require a certain score on a <a href=\"https:\/\/englishtest.duolingo.com\/applicants\">Duolingo test<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ets.org\/toefl.html\">TOEFL<\/a>. (If they accept Duolingo, I highly recommend it over TOEFL&#8211;it&#8217;s cheaper and you don&#8217;t have to drive to a testing center, but can do it on your computer at home.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Optional: If you want me to review your essay or answers to supplemental questions, send them to me at least a week or two before you need to submit your application.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Before the college deadline <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can complete this two months or one day before the deadline, but please don\u2019t wait until 11:25 on the night it\u2019s due\u2013if something goes wrong, you\u2019re sunk<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><b>:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Complete and submit the application!<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Seems obvious, right? But this most crucial step takes a long time, and you might start it before you do anything else. Also . . . it\u2019s difficult to believe, but I\u2019ve had students complete everything on the app and then forget to actually submit it.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Know whether you\u2019re completing the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apply.commonapp.org\/login\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common App<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or a college-specific app.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use the College Application Guide (linked here, also in the folder I gave you) as you work\u2013the answers to many questions you\u2019ll have will be found there. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/onward\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/College-Application-Guide-2021-22.pdf\">College Application Guide 2021-22<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Common App, you need to complete the general application and then the college-specific part, which will have several sections of questions and could have supplemental writing\u2013and the writing questions are sometimes difficult to find (sometimes they\u2019ll be in the \u201cwriting supplement\u201d section but often they\u2019re<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/collegecareerconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Confetti-1.jpg\" alt=\"https:\/\/collegecareerconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Confetti-1.jpg\" width=\"153\" height=\"144\" \/> found in the \u201cacademics\u201d portion). Allow enough time to answer those questions well\u2013they\u2019re just as important as the Common App essay.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure to use your full legal name on all documentation and give colleges your personal email\u00a0address, not your emhs.net address, which won\u2019t exist after you graduate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Review, enter your credit card information (unless it\u2019s a free application), click submit, and then celebrate!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Check for other required materials.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some colleges (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Virginia Tech, cough, cough<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) require an <\/span><b>SRAR <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(or SSAR, in Florida)&#8211;a self-reported academic record. In other words, you translate your transcripts into their form rather than having us send them. Usually, you apply first, then you\u2019ll receive instructions on creating your student portal and accessing the SRAR, which will allow the college to link your application to the SRAR.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are applying for a visual or performing arts program\/college, you\u2019ll likely need to audition or submit a portfolio. Read the college\u2019s website carefully for deadlines and instructions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Complete required financial aid documentation.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This might not be due until after the college deadline, but you need to check! It depends on each college.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/h\/apply-for-aid\/fafsa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FAFSA <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is required for all federal student aid and for most colleges if you want to qualify for grants or loans.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some colleges also require the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cssprofile.collegeboard.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CSS Profile<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is much more time-consuming and detailed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>After you apply:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check your email for a confirmation of your application from the college and instructions for setting up your <\/span><b>student portal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is where you can check to see that all your materials have been received, and often, colleges announce their decisions on your portal before you get notice via email or snail mail.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember: Do not use your emhs.net address when setting up your student portal! It could cause much confusion after you graduate and that address no longer exists.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The student portal is important! Colleges will post information regarding housing, health, and other forms you must complete. There might also be instructions for additional materials you need to submit (report cards, SRARs, etc.).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep in mind that it can take several business days for documentation to be processed, so don\u2019t panic if the portal indicates that your transcript hasn\u2019t been received. Check Scoir to see if it was sent, then give it several days. If it still doesn\u2019t show up, let me know and I\u2019ll follow up with the college.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Write a thank-you note to the teacher(s) who wrote your recommendations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s it! Easy, right? \ud83e\udd2f Don\u2019t worry. I know it feels like a lot, but keep in mind that not every step applies to every application, and there are several things you only need to do once.
