{"id":293,"date":"2019-08-19T11:17:45","date_gmt":"2019-08-19T15:17:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.clayshowalter.com\/?post_type=article&#038;p=293"},"modified":"2019-08-19T14:23:00","modified_gmt":"2019-08-19T18:23:00","slug":"dave-bechler-an-athletic-era-ends","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/today\/article\/dave-bechler-an-athletic-era-ends\/","title":{"rendered":"Dave Bechler: An Athletic Era Ends"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The end of the school year brought the end of a 23-year era of Dave Bechler as Athletic Director for EMS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than two decades at the helm of middle and high school athletics is highly unusual,\u201d noted Paul Leaman. \u201cWe have been blessed by Dave\u2019s long-term commitment to our school and students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-296 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/today\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/spring2019_IMG_5341-233x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"233\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/today\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/spring2019_IMG_5341-233x300.jpg 233w, https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/today\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/spring2019_IMG_5341-768x991.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/today\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/spring2019_IMG_5341-794x1024.jpg 794w, https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/today\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/spring2019_IMG_5341.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 233px) 100vw, 233px\" \/>That blessing has extended beyond the school\u2019s walls to the local area, regional and state levels where recognition came from the Blue Ridge Conference, Virginia Independent Conference and Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) this spring.<\/p>\n<p>At the state level, Dave served on the VISAA Executive Committee for 14 years (2004-2019), the state boys soccer committee for 13 years (2005-2019) and the state boys basketball committee for 10 years (2009-2019). He was also voted VISAA Athletic Director of the Year in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Dave served as president from 2005 to 2019 for the VIC and BRC where he was:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>#1 in all-time career wins (boys basketball)<\/li>\n<li>22 years as head varsity basketball coach<\/li>\n<li>341-291 career record<\/li>\n<li>Nine-time VIC Coach of the Year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>RECOGNITION BY COLLEAGUES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Earlier this spring at a K-12 faculty and staff spring recognition celebration, long-time colleagues Kendal Bauman and Jennifer Young shared reflections about Dave\u2019s impending departure.<\/p>\n<p>Full of laughs, it was also a time to shed some tears. Anyone who has worked with, or played for, Dave knows he has a soft heart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been crying all week,\u201d Dave confessed, leading up to the faculty recognition. \u201cThis stuff is hard, but it\u2019s all good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Find an article and view a video of the presentation at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/about\/news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">easternmennonite.org\/about\/news<\/a> \u201c<\/p>\n<p>And &#8230; the most important of all the things Dave has done,\u201d noted Bauman. \u201cHe has mentored approximately 45 middle school, 42 JV and 73 varsity coaches; that does not include assistant coaches.
