Alumna of the Year: Lori Snyder \u201979 Garrett<\/h3>\n

A passion for racial reconciliation and mentoring young female professionals shapes Lori Garrett\u2019s work as Senior Principal and Director of the Higher Education Studio at Richmond-based Glav\u00e9 & Holmes<\/a> Architecture.<\/p>\n

A high school field trip to New York City under the care of art teacher, Esther Augsburger \u201949, helped her to launch her career. Her touch is on many universities across the Commonwealth and beyond, including the 2005 EMHS Fine Arts addition.<\/p>\n

In 2018, Lori submitted a proposal for a national contest to revise Richmond\u2019s Monument Avenue. The competition\u2019s goal was to \u201cfacilitate constructive dialogue around the historic street, Confederate history, urban planning, and public art.\u201d Lori\u2019s submission is among the final 20 out of 200 under consideration.<\/p>\n

Lori will share reflections at Homecoming Sunday worship.<\/em><\/p>\n

Lifetime Service Award: Richard Shue \u201969<\/h3>\n

Richard Shue prefers to work hands on, behind the scenes, something his parents modeled and he\u2019s done all his life. Skilled with his hands and in relating to people of all backgrounds, Richard \u2013 often joined by his wife Jolene \u2013 has used his gifts in the local community and around the world, often in the areas of construction in camp and education settings.<\/p>\n

\u201cRich always puts others before himself,\u201d says Diana Suter \u201970 Berkshire, who nominated him for the award. \u201cHe is generous with his time and resources and is always kind. He loves God and serves others because of this. A group of rare and unique character traits in this day and age.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you give back,\u201d he summarizes, \u201cyou get back more than you give.\u201d<\/p>\n

Community Engagement Award: Kirsten Nafziger \u201989 Moore<\/h3>\n

Not even a surprise downpour\u00a0on an outdoor dinner party can dampen the enthusiasm of Kirsten Moore to bring people together over good food.<\/p>\n

Kirsten is the recipient of the new Community Engagement Award this year in recognition of her gifts for creating space for people to connect. Her touch has spawned multiple businesses and helped launch the local food movement in Harrisonburg.<\/p>\n

Her newest project is a revitalization of the former Big\u00a0L Tire flatiron building, called Magpie. The lower level will house a breakfast and lunch \u201cmodern interpretation of the corner diner\u201d along with an in-house bakery making artisanal bread, pastries and pies. The second floor will house The Perch at Magpie, a new location and brand for The Hub Coworking<\/a>, which Moore launched in 2015.<\/p>\n

Kirsten\u2019s touch will be on the menu for Sat. breakfast during Homecoming Weekend.<\/em><\/p>\n
