Thanks to seed money planted nearly\u00a030 years ago, a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/admissions\/scholarships\/students-of-color-scholarship-fund\/\">Students of Color Scholarship<\/a> is a way to help.<\/p>\n<p>The original endowment was established in the early 1990s to enable Laotian immigrant students at Harrisonburg Mennonite Church to attend EMHS. The family that provided the seed money is happy to see the scope broadened to include support for students of color from any ethnic background.<\/p>\n<p>Earnings from the fund have been tapped over the years for the school\u2019s routine financial\u00a0aid process; broadening it as a scholarship will, the school hopes, invite more donor support, as well as make it more accessible.<\/p>\n<p>An unsolicited gift from <strong>Chuck Hostetter \u201971<\/strong> designated for students of color in summer 2020, prompted review of the original endowment, conversations with\u00a0the founders, and revamp.<\/p>\n<p>Hostetter was moved to send a\u00a0gift after running across a stack of letters in storage. The letters were sent to him by EMHS classmates while living with his family in Nigeria during his senior year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat support from peers meant so much,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI see now how my life trajectory took shape, influenced by other cultures.\u00a0I\u2019m grateful to support this fund in appreciation for what those EMHS friends meant to me, and to support the insights and gift to\u00a0humanity people of color bring to school communities.\u201d Hostetter hopes his classmates \u2013 who\u00a0will mark their 50-year class reunion this fall \u2013 will join him in supporting the scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>Gifts of any size to the fund may be sent to the school, designated \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.easternmennonite.org\/admissions\/scholarships\/students-of-color-scholarship-fund\/\">Students of Color Scholarship.<\/a>\u201d Recipients will be named based\u00a0on an application process and financial need.
