La reciente representación de “Shakespeare's Shorts”, con vibrantes interpretaciones de “¡Adelante con la fierecilla domada!” y una versión de 15 minutos de Hamlet, cautivó al público y puso de manifiesto el papel transformador que desempeña el teatro en el desarrollo de los estudiantes.

As audience members gathered in the auditorium foyer, their excitement was palpable. One older student exclaimed, “That was actually so funny!” while a parent added, “My cheeks hurt from smiling so much during that performance!” We definitely have some rising EMS stars among us.” These reactions highlight not just the entertainment value of the play but also the profound impact theater has on students’ confidence and creativity.

Douglas Alan Diehl, quien dirigía su primera obra en EMS, aportó su dilatada experiencia como actor de toda la vida a la producción. Motivó a los estudiantes a tomar las riendas. “Gran parte de esta obra surgió de los chicos; tenían ideas increíbles, creativas e hilarantes, y yo los escuché. Creamos una puesta en escena que les resultó divertida, y realmente valió la pena”, compartió Diehl. Al crear un ambiente donde los estudiantes se sintieron escuchados y valorados, Diehl los ayudó a desarrollar su potencial, demostrando la importancia del teatro como plataforma para la autoexpresión y la colaboración.

Theater in middle school serves as a vital educational tool, offering students a chance to explore new perspectives and develop essential life skills. It encourages teamwork, nurtures empathy, and enhances communication abilities. As students engage in the creative process, they learn to navigate complex emotions and situations, building resilience and adaptability—qualities that will benefit them throughout their lives.

Diehl noted, “I wanted to teach them three things. 1) To project, to be heard. 2)To annunciate, to be heard clearly. 3)To command the stage, to take up space.”
