Dessert Theater Triumph

“She did it again!” exclaimed Maria Archer, the principal of EMES, as the students took their final bows alongside Director, Ms. Anderson, on the grand stage of the upper school auditorium last week. The occasion? The much-anticipated fall desert theater performance!

Ms. Anderson in her element
Our talented 4th and 5th graders have once again carried on the cherished tradition, working tirelessly with their teachers and the ever-dedicated Ms. Anderson. This spirited director has poured her heart and soul into desert theater, helping students hone their skills in ways that are as fun as they are educational.
Theater isn’t just about acting; it’s an essential skills development opportunity where students learn problem-solving, communication, confidence, and memorization skills. Through the magic of repetition and a sprinkle of creative tweaks (in a fun way – “mistakes are awesome!”), they train their brains to handle and tolerate small frustrations like pros. These skills aren’t just confined to the classroom at Eastern Mennonite School; they spill over into every corner of students’ lives, enhancing their social relationships and teaching them the art of teamwork. Ms. Anderson can be heard laughing as she is directing, you can tell she loves collaborating with the kids.
With real deadlines looming, like the moment they step onto the stage, students learn the importance of practice and accountability. They help each other run the lights, manage the sound, build sets, and even take on stage management roles. One parent noted on the cast painting day, “It’s a creative carnival!”

4th and 5th grade students share the stage
This year, desert theater brought to life the “Deleted Scenes” of the Wizard of Oz. It was a delightful twist on a familiar tale, reimagined with spunk and flair by our young actors and crew. The emphasis on desert theater and fine arts, from elementary school all the way through grade 12, is a hallmark of our school and education in the Eastern Mennonite tradition.
We are immensely grateful for the dedication of our teachers, who go above and beyond to ensure our students not only succeed but also shine with confidence. Just look at these pictures! Their faces are well lit, and glowing from the inside out with effort and self-assurance.
You truly have done it again, Ms. Anderson, Ms. Gibbs, and Ms. Merridy! Thank you for nurturing and teaching our kids with such work with passion.
