MDS Washington E-Term!
MDS Deep Dive: A Transformative Experience in Washington State
Nestled in the serene surroundings of Camp Gifford, Washington, near Loon Lake, a group of dedicated students embarked on a meaningful journey with the Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS). Their mission was to aid in the recovery efforts following the devastating wildfires of 2023, which ravaged 126 homes in the Elk area.
Under the guidance of exceptional MDS leaders, including project manager Vern, who meticulously procured all necessary materials, the students worked collaboratively with their crews. The daily routine began at 6 a.m. with breakfast, followed by packing lunches for the worksite. After a devotional led by EMS students, the team began the 45-minute drive to the worksite, arriving around 8:30 a.m. Where they worked on rebuilding homes and alongside skilled MDS professionals. The students’ primary task was to assist in rebuilding homes destroyed by the wildfires. Their work involved installing house wrap and foam boards, and at one site, they even tackled roofing. The presence of a timber wolf on a leash at one of the house sites added an unexpected element to their experience. The day concluded with a return to camp around 4 p.m., where they enjoyed a delicious dinner, shared job reports, and engaged in various games.
Throughout the week, the students had the profound opportunity to interact with local residents who had endured the fires in 2023. These conversations were both memorable and impactful, as the residents recounted the terrifying experience of hearing the fires approach their land and community.
Tyler Kauffman, a seasoned participant on his third MDS trip, expressed his appreciation for the diverse landscapes and the chance to connect with fellow volunteers. The group included a former Amish MDS worker, a Chactaw, Native American local, who shared captivating stories in the evenings. The students were assigned colors, inspiring curiosity cultural exchange.
Reflecting on the week, Tyler highlighted the valuable lessons learned particularly the importance of sitting in silence to listen for the creator. Emily, a student, was deeply inspired the same native worker who shared her culture, way of living, and her positive response to the fires. Her message to “look for the good” resonated deeply with Emily.
This MDS trip to Washington State was more than just a rebuilding effort; it was a transformative experience that left a lasting impact on the students, with a deeper understanding of community, resilience, and cultural appreciation.
Thankful for the Mennonite Disaster Crew in Washington state and our chaperones, Tyler and Cara Kauffman for this time spent investing in our students!
