Science at Eastern Mennonite School is more than just a subject—it’s all about discovery and exploration. Watch this video and see the magic of science as students delve into creating a mini pond ecosystem, growing plants, and studying microorganisms. This hands-on project provides just a glimpse of the engaging learning experiences offered at EMS.

Sarah Mitch, EMS high school teacher, “We want students to connect what they learn in the classroom to the world around them.”

For students like Brendan Miller, the opportunity to test what he is learning is valuable “Hands-on projects and labs not only teach us about teamwork but also immerse us in a discovery process,” he shares. This approach is echoed by fellow student Eliza Long, who expresses her enthusiasm, saying, “I love science because it’s really engaging. I enjoyscience because of the way our teachers teach it.”

Learning Science Through Discovery

We are a K-12 community so we have the opportunity to craft a curriculum that goes beyond learning basic standards through the collaborative efforts of our elementary, middle, and high school teachers, ensuring a seamless and enriching educational journey for all students filled with experiments. The high school lab featured in the video showcases students creating a pond ecosystem, where they build the conditions for the pond and study the microorganisms found within. The experience is designed to cultivate curiosity and a deeper understanding of the natural world. The elementary lab featured is an exploration of the tiny things found whole dissecting owl pellets. The students love this kind of work that is immersive.

We also offer a variety of classes for students like Eliza and Brendan who are interested in studying science beyond high school. Classes like AP Biology, AP Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Anatomy & Physiology and Environmental Science. Because of our small class sizes, each course is tailored to inspire and challenge students, preparing them for future scientific endeavors, and making it a whole lot of fun!

As Sarah Mitch puts it, “Science is about understanding the world around us!” At EMS, we make that process of understanding come alive.
