The Kennel-Charles lecture series, an annual lectureship focusing on Anabaptism, is set to take place at EMS on Monday, April 13, at 7PM.  This year’s lecture, titled “When Life Isn’t Simple: Faith in a Complex World,” promises to offer thought-provoking insights into the intersection of faith, ethics, and the complexities of modern life.

Funded by a generous endowment from a local family with a commitment to Anabaptism, the event will feature Dr. John Garland, pastor of San Antonio Mennonite Church in Texas. Dr. Garland, known for his work at the crossroads of faith, immigration, and community life, will lead the discussion.

The lecture will delve into the concept of “spectrums” as a tool for compassionate discernment, encouraging attendees to move beyond simplistic categorizations of right and wrong. Drawing on his experiences in San Antonio, Dr. Garland will argue for a more nuanced approach that seeks greater love, clarity, and faithfulness in addressing issues such as immigration, belonging, and ethical decision-making.

Central to Dr. Garland’s message is the idea of attachment to God, as exemplified in the Lord’s Prayer, which he believes is foundational for discerning complex issues with wisdom and compassion. He suggests that a secure relationship with God allows individuals to engage with the world free from judgment and control, fostering a life of humility and shared humanity.

“No action without prayer, no prayer without action.”

Dr. Garland’s background includes a decade of ministry focused on building networks of support for asylum seekers through interfaith collaboration. His academic credentials include a Doctor of Ministry from Truett Seminary at Baylor University, where he researched the use of Psalms in nurturing a secure attachment to God.

This event is open to the public, plan to join us Monday, April 13 at 7PM in the Eastern Mennonite Auditorium.
