E-Term Reflections: A Transformative Journey to Puerto Rico

This year marked a significant shift as the annual Experiential Term was moved from Spring to Fall, bringing about a new dynamic for students, staff and teachers. Parents and others often wonder what these trips are like for our students. The Puerto Rico group recently shared some of their experiences in chapel and we thought it would be fun to share some of their highlights here!

The journey began with an early morning arrival at 4 am, setting the stage for an unforgettable adventure in Puerto Rico. They only had a week, so as soon as they made it, their schedule was packed, spending several days exploring the island, savoring new foods, and immersing themselves in the vibrant culture. The itinerary was packed with exciting activities:

– Monday: The day started with in Aibonito, Puerto Rico, a small mountain town where they were able to walk around and explore, offering a glimpse into the island’s history and rich culture.

– Tuesday: Students enjoyed a day at the beach in San Juan, playing soccer and soaking up the sun.

– Wednesday: A hike led them to a castle perched atop a mountain, where their host prepared a meal, roasted s’mores, and hosted a campfire with hymns, with a breathtaking view.

– Thursday: The day was filled with learning about coqui frogs, numerous dogs, and iguanas. Despite the hot and buggy conditions, the experience was rewarding, culminating in a return to the beach. That night, students participated in a bioluminescent kayaking trip, witnessing the bay’s magical glow.

– Friday: The trip concluded with a visit to Summit Hills, a Mennonite school in Puerto Rico. Students shared lunch, learned about the local life, and engaged in friendly games of basketball and volleyball with mennonite students there.

Throughout the trip, the students built new friendships with each other. Several of the students noted that this is the one of the main things they learn – to make new friends and get out of their typical friend groups to engage others. Another key takeaway for students was the emphasis on relationships in Puerto Rican culture, as highlighted by the interactions with the bus driver, guides, and locals. The food was another highlight, featuring fresh fruit like coconuts and meals prepared by local ladies from the host church, providing a delightful culinary experience.

Special thanks go to Eileen, who cooked for the students and shared insights about Puerto Rico, and Ms. Joanna Moyer-Diener, a staff member born in Puerto Rico, along with her husband Davi, who grew up there and Mr. Blosser who led the trip. Their connections and expertise were instrumental in creating an unforgettable experience for the students!
