UPDATE: Grant placed 5th in the regional spelling bee this weekend! Congratulations!

Since 1925 students have been participating in the Scripps National spelling bee. Students first participating in classrooms, schoolwide, then a regional spelling, and ending in the nation’s capital. Sponsored locally by the Rockingham District Ruritan’s.

Excitement was in the air on January 17th when 11 students from grades 6-8 showcased their spelling skills. It was 6th graders Grant Lehman, 1st place, and Cyrus Diener, runner up. Grant earned a spot in the regional competition, held at Skyline Middle school March 2, 2024.

Both spelling events are a stepping stone to the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Been in Washington D.C., getting talented participants from various schools, including Harrisonburg City, Rockingham and Shenandoah County Public Schools, Eastern Mennonite School and Redeemer Classical School.

Eastern Mennonite School takes pride in the dedication and hard work demonstrated by its students, who have passionately prepared for this linguistic challenge.

We wish all participants the best of luck as they embark on this exciting journey, spelling their way through words. Aiming for success on the national stage in Washington, D.C..
