Learn, Lead, and Belong at EMS

Eastern Mennonite School (EMS) stands out by offering a seamless K-12 experience on one campus. Located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, EMS provides a nurturing environment where students from elementary to high school share a cohesive journey, enriched by unique traditions and mini-cultures within each division.
Entering a new school can be a daunting experience, but for many students, EMS quickly becomes a place of warmth and growth. “Something I can’t explain about EMS to people until they get here,” Karcyn shares, “is how great the people are. They’re so accepting, generous, and caring.”
From her first day, the welcoming nature of the school’s community was evident. “I was really nervous because I knew that there was an elementary school and a lot of the kids would probably already know each other,” she recalls about starting sixth grade. However, the support from teachers and peers made all the difference. “The teachers were just so great. It was just really welcoming,” “I was like, ‘Okay, that makes me feel better.’”
Friendships formed at EMS often become lasting bonds. “I had a great friend group that was really strong. The same friend group I still have today. I feel like that was the first time that EMS was my school, my people.”
Beyond the classroom, EMS offers activities for connection and personal growth. “In seventh grade, I ran cross country and played soccer,” Karcyn shares. “It was a really great way to get me involved with other people outside of my grade.” Theater also played a pivotal role in her experience. “We had a play called ‘Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood.’ It was my first experience in acting.”
Theater taught valuable life lessons, too. “Theater has taught me a lot about how to handle disappointments. So, if a show didn’t go how you wanted or you didn’t get the part you wanted, you have to handle that and just keep going!”
The sense of community at EMS is unparalleled. “You’ll never feel alone because there will always be someone there for you. No matter who you are, where you come from. I just can’t say that enough,” Karcyn concludes, capturing the essence of what makes EMS a truly extraordinary place.
