Celebrating Transitions: Dr. Paul Leaman

Eastern Mennonite School is preparing for a significant transition as Dr. Paul Leaman, the esteemed Head of School, announces his decision to conclude his service at the end of the 2026–2027 school year. Dr. Leaman, who has dedicated 24 years to EMS, will continue to lead the school through the upcoming academic year, marking a remarkable tenure characterized by visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to the school community.

Under Dr. Leaman’s guidance, EMS has achieved several notable milestones, including the completion of a fine arts addition and auditorium, the establishment of an elementary school, and the creation of a comprehensive K–12 campus. Known for his passion for education, Dr. Leaman has been a champion for teachers and staff, and he has always enjoyed engaging with students. The EMS community expresses deep gratitude for his contributions and leadership.

In a heartfelt letter to the community, Dr. Leaman reflects on his time at EMS, expressing gratitude for the support and relationships he has built with students, families, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends. He shares his enthusiasm for the next chapter, which involves semi-retirement and transitioning leadership. Dr. Leaman is confident in the capabilities of the current leaders at EMS and looks forward to spending more time with his wife, Mary, and engaging in family projects.

Dr. Leaman remains a steadfast supporter of EMS and its mission, which emphasizes embodying the love of Jesus in a learning community where every student belongs, thrives, and contributes to God’s work in the world. He expresses his hope that the community will continue to uphold this vision and looks forward to supporting EMS as a grandparent and a dedicated supporter.

To ensure a smooth transition, Dr. Leaman will remain fully engaged as Head of School until June 2027, working closely with faculty and staff to maintain the high standards of academic excellence and care that EMS is known for. The Board of Directors has formed a search committee, chaired by Vice-Chair Kendal Swartzentruber, to lead the search for the next Head of School. This process will include gathering community input through a survey to identify the qualities desired in the new leader.

As EMS embarks on this exciting season of transition, the school community is encouraged to continue its prayers, partnership, and support. The Board of Directors, led by Chair Deb King, expresses gratitude for the community’s ongoing commitment and looks forward to celebrating Dr. Leaman’s leadership this spring.
